Mathematics

The aims of MYP mathematics are to encourage and enable students to enjoy mathematics, develop curiosity and begin to appreciate its elegance and power. Mathematics in MYP builds on students’ mathematical experiences in the Primary Years. Students continue to develop their understanding of numbers and algebra, geometry and measures, and statistics. They develop confidence, perseverance and independence in mathematical thinking and problem-solving. They are encouraged to apply and transfer their skills to a wide range of real-life situations and seek connections between other areas of study. They learn to reflect critically upon their own work, and grow in resilience and creative thinking. Students have opportunities to work both independently and collaboratively, and they are encouraged to explore a range of resources to aid their learning and communicate their ideas. Students learn to appreciate the international dimension in mathematics through an awareness of the universality of mathematics and its multicultural and historical perspectives. The MYP mathematics course provides a good basis for further study of mathematics, sciences and humanities courses.
