Language and Literature

An MYP student presenting an analysis of a traditional narrative which has been modernised and turned into a blockbuster animated movie.

Texts envelop our daily lives, permeating every aspect of our existence. From the towering billboards along highways to the captivating narratives woven within novels, Language and Literature emerge as vital conduits through which we navigate the complexities of our world. At our institution, Language and Literature stands as a beacon of intellectual exploration, inviting students to delve into a diverse array of texts spanning genres and mediums. Whether analysing poetry, dissecting advertising techniques, or deconstructing cinematic narratives, students are prompted to scrutinize the multifaceted ways in which language shapes our perceptions and experiences. Through this rich variety of texts, students cultivate not only their critical thinking skills but also their capacity for creative expression, laying the groundwork for a lifelong journey of intellectual discovery.

Within the realm of the IB MYP and DP Language and Literature courses, students are tasked with a range of challenges aimed at fostering intellectual growth and personal development. From crafting insightful essays to delivering persuasive

speeches, students are encouraged to engage actively in discourse, challenging their assumptions and broadening their perspectives. Through lively debates and collaborative discussions, students confront global concerns, grappling with complex issues that transcend geographical and cultural boundaries. Furthermore, students are inspired to explore their creative potential, composing evocative poetry, inventing compelling narratives, and exploring the nuances of language to convey their thoughts and emotions with precision and clarity. With texts carefully selected to reflect diverse voices and perspectives, students are not only encouraged to develop a love for reading but also to refine their communication skills, equipping them with the tools to navigate an increasingly interconnected world.

In the ever-evolving landscape of Language and Literature, our curriculum embodies a commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals who are adept at navigating the complexities of our global society. Through the exploration of texts from around the world, students are challenged to confront issues of social justice, cultural diversity, and ethical responsibility. By fostering a love for reading and an appreciation for the power of language, our programme empowers students to become conscientious global citizens who are capable of effecting positive change in their communities and beyond.

“My favourite lesson is English because I really enjoy being creative in the form of literature. I have always enjoyed reading and writing stories because of how free I can be with my work. Our teacher is nice and cares for us and our environment. I overall enjoy it as a lesson and it has been like this ever since I was a child.”
