Mathematics

At BBIS, we are committed to encouraging students to enjoy maths, to be curious, to inquire and to question. We want learners to make meaningful connections, linking the maths they explore in the classroom to their everyday lives. Our aim is for students to apply their skills beyond school and to recognise that mathematical thinking is an essential life skill.

Our maths curriculum is based on the British Curriculum, but we have adapted it to suit our inquiry-led approach to teaching and learning. This opens space for students to develop autonomy in what they learn and how they learn it. We want our lessons to provoke inquiry, nurture enthusiasm, and equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to achieve the highest standards.

We believe all students can succeed in maths. Our goal is for learners to be confident, reflective risk-takers in their conceptual understanding and use of mathematics. This empowers them with the self-belief and determination needed to tackle challenges, think critically, and explore solutions.

Mathematical talk and collaboration are central to our approach. We encourage students to discuss ideas, share strategies, and develop a rich mathematical language of their own. A key principle of our practice is helping students recognise how maths connects to the wider world, making their learning meaningful, relevant, and strongly linked to our Units of Inquiry.
